Wind used to power Wastewater Treatment Plant

BELLEVUE, OHIO -- Norfolk Southern is erecting a 50 kilowatt wind turbine at its Bellevue Yard in Ohio to power the yard’s wastewater treatment plant. Construction of the turbine is expected to begin in November and be complete by the end of the year. This is one of the first times wind has been used to provide power to a railroad facility in the U.S.

“Norfolk Southern is assessing opportunities to utilize alternative renewable energy sources where practical,” said Chuck Wehrmeister, vice president safety and environmental. “We are confident that the wind turbine at Bellevue Yard will be an immediate success, and we are looking at other facilities on the Norfolk Southern system to take advantage of wind power.”

The wind turbine, supplied by Entegrity Wind Systems of Boulder, Colo., consists of three 24-foot rotor blades mounted on an 80-foot tower. Based on the wind profile at Bellevue, it will generate more than 100,000 kilowatt hours annually to power the pumps and controls of Bellevue Yard’s wastewater treatment plant. The plant collects and treats the water used at the yard’s maintenance facilities as well as rainwater runoff.

Norfolk Southern Corporation is one of the nation’s premier transportation companies. Its Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operates approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serving every major container port in the eastern United States and providing superior connections to western rail carriers.

Ozone Kills MRSA “Super Bugs”

Scottsdale, AZ -- Sanitizing towels, linens, and surfaces with ozonated water has been shown to be extremely effective in the reduction of Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria and its more drug-resistant and harder to treat strain known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is spreading rapidly in the US population.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association that in 2005, 94,000 people contracted serious, or invasive, staph infections and 19,000 of them died; rates three times the previous estimates.

Both staph and MRSA can cause more-serious skin infections or they can lead to pneumonia, or infections of the bloodstream, ear, urinary tract, or the lining of the brain.

MRSA had nearly always been connected to health care but is now spreading into communities such as schools, athletic facilities, health clubs and hospitality industries at about 15 percent of MRSA cases in the United States per the CDC report.

CDC recommendations for preventing infections in the general public focus on good hygiene including regular and rigorous hand washing, showering, and not sharing towels, razors and other potentially contaminated items/surfaces with others. CDC advises that you always practice good hygiene, for example in health clubs, use a barrier such as clothing or a towel between your skin and shared equipment.

The CDC also recommend wiping down frequently contacted surfaces such as phones, stair banisters, desk tops, key boards, faucets, tubs, sinks, floors, toilets and shower stall surfaces before and after use.

Research and real world application studies conducted by members of the International Ozone Association (IOA), their customers and testing agencies have shown ambient temperature wash of laundry and surfaces with ozonated water to be effective at reducing pathogenic organisms including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria and MRSA by up to 99.999999%.

In a 2006 paper presented at the International Ozone Association Conference in Arlington Texas, “Ozone in the Laundry Industry -- Practical Experiences in the United Kingdom”, Cardis, et. al. reported on comparative testing conducted by Microsearch Laboratories (UK) confirming that low temperature ozone wash is extremely effective at inactivating organisms typically found on garments, towels and linens from healthcare facilities”.

Ozone currently protects public health in drinking water and wastewater treatment and is proving to be a safe and affective antimicrobial, sanitizer and disinfectant in numerous commercial and industrial applications.

Lisa Henthorne Elected President of IDA

DENVER, CO -- Lisa Henthorne, a CH2M HILL’s vice president and global director of desalination has been named President of the International Desalination Association (IDA).

During her two-year term as president, Henthorne will be responsible for developing a new strategic plan for the association and developing relationships with regional affiliate associations. Henthorne has been active with IDA for a number of years as a North American representative on the Board of Directors and serving as co-chair for the 2007 World Congress.

“Concerns about global warming, energy consumption and increased demand for potable water sources are causing a dramatic expansion of the desalination industry,” said Henthorne. “These changes present an exciting opportunity for IDA to play a more centralized role in speaking for the industry to increase public awareness of the many benefits of desalination, including drought-proof reliability, expandability, availability and potentially unlimited production.”

A recognized expert with more than 20 years of experience in technology assessment, pre-treatment evaluation, pilot testing, and design optimization for seawater desalination systems, Henthorne holds three U.S. patents in water treatment technology.

“This appointment is a testament to Lisa’s leadership in the desalination industry and will allow her to share her expertise on the most innovative technologies and uses for desalination with the larger industry,” said Tom Searle, president of CH2M HILL’s Water Business Group. “Lisa has been an invaluable resource on CH2M HILL’s desalination work worldwide moving the industry forward through research and technology applications to provide sustainable drinking water solutions. We are proud to have her represent our firm as president of IDA.”

About International Desalination Association

IDA is a non-profit association of over 1,300 members in 58 countries committed to the development and promotion of the appropriate use of desalination and desalination technology worldwide. Membership is comprised of scientists, end-users, engineers, consultants and researchers from governments, corporations and academia. IDA is associated with the United Nations as part of a growing international network of nongovernmental organizations.

Sadr City increases availability of Potable Water

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Sadr City residents will soon see a significant improvement in potable water availability.

Construction is nearing completion on over $75 million in work including a new water treatment plant and new water lines to more than 80 percent of Sadr City’s 2.5 million population. The R-3 Water Treatment Plant will have the capacity to produce 4,000 cubic meters of potable water per hour (25 million gallons each day) which will significantly supplement the existing water supply.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along with the Baghdad Amanat / Baghdad Water Authority are involved in this undertaking and the work is scheduled to be completed by January. Ministry of Electricity is ensuring that R-3 is hooked up to the national grid and Ministry of Oil is allocating diesel fuel for the back-up generators available for emergencies.

Mohammad Juwaree, the USACE Iraqi project engineer overseeing the work at R-3 as well as the new water lines going in at Sadr City, says it is definitely been a joint effort and because of everyone’s support, “we’ve overcome numerous challenges and are making great progress.”

Over $20 million is being invested to install new water lines in 68 of Sadr City’s 79 sectors. The majority of that work is already finished.

The Tigris River is the source of raw water supplied by the Al Sadr Qana’at Pump Station. More than $5 million was allocated to rehabilitating that facility including the installation of four new large intake pumps and renovation of four existing ones.

The new $50 million R-3, located on the west side of Sadr City, has been under construction for three years and will soon be in the “wet test commissioning” phase when water is pumped through the various treatment stages to ensure everything is operating as required. “Once it passes those inspections and testing, it will ready to go on line,” Juwaree explained.

“Sadr City residents are anxiously awaiting that day. They’ve historically had low or no water pressure and this effort definitely will improve their quality of life. This is huge news for everyone in Baghdad,” he added.

Juwaree earned a civil engineering degree from Baghdad University and has worked for USACE for two years.

As a proud member of the team overseeing the Sadr City improvements, he said, “It clearly demonstrates the Iraqi government is taking the lead helping residents with their essential service needs. It’s a great example what can be accomplished when everyone works together.”
