Microturbines to Power RO and Clean Water

CHATSWORTH, CA -- Capstone Turbine Corporation, the world’s leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, today announced that it received a follow on order for three C1000 systems from Aquatec-Maxcon Pty Ltd, its distributor for the Australian market. The order is for Capstone C1000 MicroTurbine® systems to be installed by a coal seem gas producer in a reverse osmosis water system application in Australia.

“Australia is proving to be a strong market for both green building and oil & gas applications. This project is to power a reverse osmosis plant that cleans contaminated water that is a byproduct of coal seem gas extraction. The clean water is made available to local towns as potable water,” said Jim Crouse, Capstone’s Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

Commenting on this new order, Capstone President and CEO Darren Jamison added, “We were very pleased with the $4.7 million order from Aquatec-Maxcon in July for our C30 microturbines. It is encouraging to see the momentum continue with this latest order for C1000’s from the same end-user as our C30 microturbines.”

Aquatec-Maxcon is Australia’s leading provider of water and wastewater technology and equipment. It is headquartered in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and now a newly acquired property in New Zealand. Through its sister company, PT Aquatec-Maxcon Indonesia, it also has offices in Jakarta and Surabaya.

The C1000 is a robust megawatt power system, based on Capstone’s C200 microturbine product line. It will be configured in a single ISO container and will provide the same low emissions and low maintenance benefits of Capstone’s products in a compact footprint.

Siemens takes over Hamburg-based SG Water

Erlangen, Germany -- Siemens announced the acquisition of the German company SG Wasseraufbereitung und Regenerierstation GmbH (SG Water). The Hamburg-based supplier specializes in water treatment solutions for laboratories and industrial organizations.

SG Water’s electro-deionization systems and reverse osmosis technology for laboratory and industrial applications will further strengthen the portfolio of Siemens Water Technologies, a Business Unit of Siemens’ Industry Solutions Division. SG Water employees roughly 60 staff members at two locations in Barsbüttel near Hamburg and Haimhausen near Munich.

SG Water can look back on more than 30 years of experience in developing, producing and selling high-purity water products and systems for laboratories and industry around the world.

"The solutions of SG Water will complement especially our water treatment product portfolio in the USA", says Dave Spyker, Executive Vice President of the Industry Segment for Siemens Water Technologies. "More than half of SG Water’s turnover is generated outside Germany in countries such as the USA, Ireland, the UK and China."

Spyker continues, "The acquisition is about strengthening our portfolio and our service business as well as expanding our international footprint in the high-purity water solutions market."

The hitherto privately owned SG Water will continue to operate under the same name, but with the addition of “A Siemens Company.”

Mayor Daley to give WEFTEC Keynote Speech

Alexandria, VA -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF) is proud to announce that Mayor Richard M. Daley will give a keynote speech at the largest water quality conference in North America attended by participants from many countries.

If it’s about water, it will be at WEFTEC.08 in Chicago October 18-22. The unrivaled exhibition and conference is an annual event that brings experts in water and wastewater together to discuss the latest developments in research and technology.

Recognized as one of the greenest cities in America, Chicago is an ideal host for this event. Mayor Daley has led the effort to make Chicago a global leader in adapting green practices. Under Daley’s active leadership, the city has long focused on programs and practices that protect water quality, promote sustainability, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

With a population of nearly 3 million residents, Chicago installed the first-ever municipal green roof in the U.S. The city has also initiated a Chicago Climate Action Plan while creating green jobs and planting 500,000 new trees.

The mayor will speak about Making Chicago a Global Leader on Water and Sustainability. This keynote will provide an opportunity for WEFTEC attendees and water leaders from around the world to hear Mayor Daley share his experiences, and provide his perspective on environmental issues.

Mr. Losey wants help with WAS & MLSS:

I operate a wastewater treatment system that consists of a 1.25 million gallon aeration basin with 0.35 MGD with approximately 3,000 mg/L BOD and 1,200 TSS mg/L in the influent.

We have been having some issues with our final clarifier with having some carry over of around 500 mg/L lately. This had been happening for a few weeks prior to me stepping in. I started to control our WAS sludge better to increase our MCRT.

Our MLSS had been around 5,000 mg/L when I started. Once we reduced the WAS, we saw an improvement in our clarifier except for some small fines in our effluent totaling around 70 mg/L. Our MLSS has been rising slightly as a result and we are approaching around 6,000 mg/L. I am having concerns with getting to high of a MLSS concentration and need some assistance in identifying when to start increasing the WAS volume.

In the past, we have been able to operate in the 4,000 mg/L range. Should we simply increase our WAS rate slowly and observe the effects over the next few weeks? Or is there something else we should look at to assist us in determining when to work our way back to our normal operating range?
