Four-Time
Award Winner
ONDEO Nalco Wins
R&D 100 Award
NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 20
/PRNewswire/ -- For the fourth year in a row, ONDEO Nalco has been
selected as a recipient of an R&D 100 Award. The award,
presented by R&D Magazine, recognizes the 100 most significant
technologies of the year. This year, ONDEO Nalco's Anionic ULTIMER
product was chosen as an award recipient.
Like
the original ULTIMER product line (which won the R&D 100 Award
in 1999), Anionic ULTIMER is an oil-free, water-based flocculent
polymer. Since its introduction in 1997, the ULTIMER line of
products has prevented millions of pounds of oils and surfactants
from entering the world's waterways.
When ONDEO Nalco introduced the
ULTIMER product line in 1999, it consisted only of cationic
flocculent polymers. Today the ULTIMER platform has been expanded to
include an anionic flocculent polymer. Anionic ULTIMER gives ONDEO
Nalco access to a wider marketplace in wastewater treatment, paper,
and mining. By overcoming various technical challenges, ONDEO Nalco
is the first to offer a product of this kind to the market place.
ONDEO Nalco's ULTIMER products remove
suspended solids, organic matter and other materials from water
prior to its use in industrial processes. Being water-based, ULTIMER
polymers do not contain hydrocarbon oils or surfactants, which means
reduced air emissions, toxicity, flammability and transportation
hazards.
"We are honored to have been
recognized four years in a row by the distinguished panel of judges
at R&D Magazine," said Christian Maurin, Chairman and CEO
of ONDEO Nalco. "We are focused on delivering a return on
investment to our customers by creating new, environmentally
beneficial solutions to their challenges. Anionic ULTIMER allows us
to provide a more complete, oil-free option to our water treatment
customers."
ONDEO Nalco, a subsidiary of ONDEO,
is the worldwide leader in water treatment and process chemicals
with 10,000 employees working with more than 60,000 customers in 120
countries and annual revenues of $2.8 billion. ONDEO is the premier
water-related solutions provider with a presence in 130 countries
supplying 110 million people with water and wastewater services,
providing services to more than 60,000 industrial customers, and has
built more than 10,000 water treatment plants worldwide. ONDEO is
the water division of SUEZ.

Million Purchase Price
American Water Works
Receives Approval to Acquire California Water & Wastewater
Operations
VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--Sept. 24, 2001--American Water Works Company, Inc.
(NYSE:AWK), the largest publicly traded water services company in
the United States, announced that the California Public Utilities
Commission approved the acquisition of the water and wastewater
assets of Citizens Communications Company by California-American
Water Company, an American Water subsidiary.
The
unanimous vote by the Commissioners late last week was the final
state public utility regulatory approval that American Water needs
to complete the acquisition of Citizens operations in six states.
The transaction, which is expected to close before the end of the
year, will add more than one million people to the 10 million
American Water now serves.
According to American Water President
and CEO J. James Barr, "This decision is especially gratifying
for us in two ways. First, the Commission accepted the regulatory
approach that we suggested - one that both provides significant
benefits to customers and gives the Company the opportunity to
realize its economic goals for the acquisition. Second, and more
important, the unanimous vote indicates the Commissioners share our
belief that the acquisition is in the best interests of the
customers of both companies."
About American Water Works
With annual revenues of $1.4 billion,
American Water Works Company is the nation's largest publicly traded
enterprise devoted exclusively to the water and wastewater business.
Its 5,000 associates provide water, wastewater and other water
resource management services to more than 10 million people in 1,300

Open Letter - WEFTEC Show Must Go On
Dear Colleagues:
The Board of Directors, Executive
Committee and staff of the Water Environment Federation offer
deepest condolences to our extended family and friends who have been
affected personally by the tragic events of last week. The human
toll taken by the destruction and devastation of the terrorist
attacks is tremendous and will forever stay with us.
In
order to collectively step forward and serve the communities in New
York and Washington, D.C., WEF has set up a special section of our
website. We are also providing you, as a water quality professional,
with other relevant information in this section. The website address
is:
The New York Water Environment
Association (NYWEA) reports that they have no indications at
this time, of any impact on wastewater treatment in the New York
area. Their staff has been involved in checking water supplies
and treatment facilities, and all seems to be functioning well.
Everyone has been touched in some
manner as is evidenced by the outpouring of support from nations
across the world. WEF has received many expressions of concern
from our affiliates worldwide that we would like to share with
you. We thank all for their thoughts and prayers.
Many of you who have not had the
opportunity to visit WEF headquarters may not be aware that WEF
is approximately 5 miles (8 km) from the Pentagon. The smoke
could be seen clearly and lingered above northern Alexandria.
Many staff members have family and friends who work at the
Pentagon.
A listing of relief efforts.
Please let us know if you have information on others we can add
to the list. WEF is participating in the Associations Advance
America fund that has been set up by the American Society of
Association Executives and the American Red Cross to mobilize
financial support. I encourage our Member Associations and
individual members to join us in this campaign.
WEFTEC 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia,
October 13-17 will go on. As President Bush has asked that we
resolve to be strong and "go back to work" we will
continue to update you on WEF activities. Although business as
usual is difficult to imagine, business at WEF has resumed to
full capacity and staff are dedicated to the success of the
WEFTEC event.
Information from the EPA and other
agencies and organizations.
Last Tuesday, the FBI issued a
Terrorist Threat Advisory, intended for all infrastructures
including water and wastewater systems, which is effective until
October 11.
EPA Administrator Christine Todd
Whitman announced the Agency was working with state officials in
New York and federal agencies to ensure the safety of rescue
workers and the public by alerting water supply systems to
provide any information on security incidents to the FBI.
Employees out of EPA's New York
regional office are operating out of temporary quarters in New
Jersey.
I wish you and your family comfort
and peace. Please let us know if we can be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Joe C. Stowe, Jr.
WEF President

Provider of Wastewater Treatment and
Byproduct Chemical Recovery Technologies and Services Enhances
USFilter’s Industrial Outsourcing Services Portfolio
HOUSTON, Sept. 18, 2001 – USFilter
has acquired Texas-based Modular Environmental Technologies (MET), a
national provider of wastewater treatment and byproduct chemical
recovery technologies and services. USFilter Operating Services has
begun operating and managing seven outsourcing facilities that serve
MET’s 11 industrial clients located throughout the United States.
MET
provides proprietary technology solutions to the refining, steel and
specialty chemical industries. Often using modular concepts, this
niche company treats industrial wastewater and offers byproduct
chemical recovery services through long-term service agreements
whereby MET typically owns and operates facilities for its
customers.
“MET is a perfect fit for our
industrial outsourcing services business,” said Ron Davis,
executive vice president and general manager, USFilter Operating
Services. “Their technology-based outsourcing business model is
consistent with our industrial outsourcing capabilities and
solutions -- including those offered by the newly-acquired Scaltech.
With the recent additions of Scaltech and MET to our portfolio, we
are more than ever equipped to meet the needs of industrial
customers.”
MET’s 40-plus team of employees
will now become part of the USFilter team. “MET has an excellent
reputation in the marketplace for its outstanding customer service
and its sophisticated process solutions. This is entirely due to the
company’s employees and its innovative approach to providing niche
services to customers. We are pleased to now have this group of
industry experts as part of the USFilter team,” added Davis.
“The acquisition assures our
growth,” said Calvin LeFevre, president of MET. “Being part of
USFilter secures the sustainable expansion of our business. With
access to USFilter’s financial and human resources, we will be
able to pursue larger contracts and opportunities that may not have
been possible before.” Further terms of the agreement were not
disclosed.
USFilter Operating Services, which is
part of USFilter, designs, builds, operates, owns and finances
water, wastewater and related utility facilities and systems.
USFilter is a Vivendi Water company, the leading global provider of
commercial, industrial, municipal and residential water and
wastewater treatment systems, products and services, with operations
in more than 100 countries. Together, Vivendi Water, Onyx (solid
waste and industrial services), Dalkia (energy management), and
Connex (transportation and logistics) comprise Vivendi
Environnement, the largest environmental services company in the
world with annual revenues of more than $23 billion.
I am trying to figure out how much
aeration it will take to increase our waste water flow from a
dissolved Oxygen of 2ppm to 5ppm? How many hp or kWh will this
take for a 100 gpm flow with standard aerators?
