Engineering Students Win Top Prize with Haestad Methods' WaterCAD
------------------------------------------------------------
WATERBURY, Conn., Sept. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Haestad Methods is
pleased to announce that Dan Kranenburg, Rebecca MacIssac, and
Dan Bauer of the University of Portland won the 2000 Parsons
Brinckerhoff Student Design Project Competition at the ASCE
Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) Conference
in Minneapolis. The students used Haestad Methods' own WaterCAD
model to look at the problem of low or negative water pressure in
Burlington, Oregon. Their paper, titled "Analysis and Design
to Correct Low Pressure in a Water Distribution System,"
described their analysis of alternatives for addressing low water
pressure in the Burlington Water District. The district is
located north of Portland, Oregon and purchases its water from
the City of Portland. Fluctuating and low water pressure is a
nuisance. The student's innovative alternative not only solved
the fluctuating and low-pressure problems, but also increased
the reliability of the system at a low cost.
The purpose of the students' study was to evaluate possible
design solutions based on an analysis of the water district.
This information was then used to create a computer generated
(WaterCAD) hydraulic model. Scenarios were run on the computer
model to determine the most acceptable alternative. Of the four
alternatives, the addition of a second booster pump was chosen.
Jim Doane from the City of Portland Water Bureau was pleased with
the students' analysis. "On the basis of the students' analysis,
we now understand the complex dynamics of the situation that
resulted in fluctuating water pressures, including many periods
of low water pressure every day. We will be working with the
water district and others on short and long term solutions to
correct the low pressure problems."
The three students pursued this project while seniors in the
Civil Engineering Program at the University of Portland. All
three participated in the Air Force ROTC program and will be
heading to Air Force assignments upon graduation.
Mark Kennedy, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Professor of Civil
Engineering, University of Portland, Faculty Advisor said,
"We selected WaterCAD for its ease of use. The students had
used the student version in my Hydraulics class, so the
professional version was a natural choice for the project.
They were able to complete their project in time and with
accurate results. The program let them spend time on analysis
rather than having to take time learning the software.
I'm proud of what they were able to accomplish using this model."

EPA and Chicago Agree On Innovative Pollution Prevention Project
------------------------------------------------------------
CHICAGO, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) Region 5 and Illinois EPA today signed an agreement
with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater
Chicago (MWRD) to develop an innovative project to reduce
pollutants entering local wastewater treatment plants and the
Chicago River.
MWRD treats wastewater from domestic, commercial, and industrial
facilities in Chicago and surrounding communities. Under this
agreement, EPA and Illinois EPA will give MWRD flexibility in
its oversight of small industrial dischargers. In return, MWRD
will establish partnerships with metal finishers and other
industries to reduce pollutants discharged into MWRD's wastewater
treatment plants.
In addition, EPA, Illinois EPA, MWRD, and interested stakeholders,
including Citizens for a Better Environment, the Chicago
Industrial Metal Finishers Association, and the North Industrial
Business Council, will form a task force to identify pollutants
that are not currently regulated in the MWRD system but are of
local concern. One example is chlorinated solvents which are
used by many industries to clean equipment. The solvents are not
usually found in MWRD's sewer system, but they are potentially air
and hazardous waste concerns. MWRD will try to reduce these types
of pollutants over the next couple of years through pollution
prevention strategies and consumer education.
This agreement is part of EPA's Project XL program, which stands
for excellence and leadership. Under Project XL, EPA offers
businesses, communities, industry sectors, and local government
agencies flexibility in testing new approaches that promise superior
environmental results and are transferable to other situations.
To participate in Project XL, the applicant must be able to develop
strategies that produce superior environmental results beyond
those that would have been achieved under current regulations and
policies.
"Project XL encourages testing of cleaner, cheaper, and smarter
ways to attain environmental results. The project being announced
today promises to reduce pollution in the Chicago River and, if
successful, will lead to changes in the way we protect the
environment," said EPA Regional Administrator Francis X. Lyons.
"I commend the District for being among the first in Illinois
to participate in this new approach to improving environmental
performance," said Illinois EPA Director Tom Skinner.

UV Water Treatment System Chosen for World's Largest Semiconductor Fab
------------------------------------------------------------
VALENCIA, Calif., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Aquafine Corporation
has been named supplier for the UV water treatment equipment
for the new Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSM) Fab 7
in Singapore. This $2.1 billion semiconductor fab is said to
be the largest in the world and is expected to be operational
by mid-2001.
Aquafine will supply their next-generation TOC reduction UV
systems. "Aquafine TOC reduction units are perfect for an
application such as this. Deploying powerful, high-intensity
UV lamps, the units are able to oxidize trace organics into
free radicals and carbon dioxide, which are easily removed
by ion exchange resins and/or degasifiers," says Mike Murphy,
president of Aquafine.
The CSM fab will be equipped to support advanced manufacturing
process technologies. The clean room alone will be approximately
170,000 square feet, making it one of the largest eight-inch
wafer fabrication centers in the word. This is the second Singapore
fab, in recent months that has specified Aquafine's UV systems.
Aquafine Corporation, founded in 1949, is the world's leading
manufacturer of ultraviolet water treatment equipment for pure
and ultrapure applications and supplies UV equipment to
semiconductor manufacturers worldwide. Aquafine meets or exceeds
the most stringent specifications in a variety of industries
ranging from semiconductor to bio-pharmaceutical, food and
beverage to power generation.
